Morrissey Is A Man Of Mystery

Back in the 1990s when I was a jaded, depressed, unhappy, teenager I started listening to The Smiths. I think one of my first crushes was on Steven Patrick Morrissey. Although my crush on Morrissey has faded over time I still respect him as an artist. Some people say Morrissey is irrelevant to the music industry but I strongly disagree. I think sometimes he is misunderstood. Sometimes I do feel Morrissey takes himself a bit too seriously after all he’s a pop superstar.

I remember a friend of mine he loaned me a copy of “Viva Hate” Morrissey’s first solo album. I loved the brashness of Morrissey’s lyrics and the assertiveness of his voice. Morrissey is a very good singer he is also very opinionated, outspoken, and attractive. Morrissey still looks good for a man that’s almost 49 years old.

The Smiths were a cult eighties British rock group. I didn’t discover The Smiths until the 1990s. I was most impressed with the lead singer and songwriter for the group Steven Patrick Morrissey.

Morrissey was born in Manchester England in the year 1959. Morrissey has a cult following in North America a few of his albums have reached gold status. Even when Morrissey didn’t have a record deal for seven years he toured and sold out concerts. For a long time Morrissey refused to conduct interviews because he felt the media manipulated his comments by twisting his words to create controversies.

The interesting aspect about Morrissey is he refuses to declare his sexual orientation. Some pop critics in the occidental media have declared Morrissey is gay even though he chooses not to speak about his sexuality. In England British journalists often compare Morrissey to the gay literary icon Oscar Wilde. I can see the comparison between both Wilde and Steven Patrick Morrissey have Irish roots. Both Wilde and Morrissey are also passionate about their art and politics. Morrissey and Wilde are also very outspoken and controversial as well.

In the song “America Is Not The World” Morrissey does talk about race, gender, and sexuality. I don’t know if Morrissey is gay but I definitely know he’s not straight. I think perhaps Morrissey is bisexual. People don’t really think about male bisexuality. There is an assumption in society that men cannot be bisexual. A man is either heterosexual or homosexual there is no in between. So why is there this double standard? Female singers can declare they are lesbians or bisexual and nobody says anything.

Now if you listen to The Smiths songs like “Hand In Glove” and “Charming man” you know the songs have a strong homoerotic element. Morrissey continues with the homoeroticism in songs later on in career such as “Roy Keen”. Also, has anyone ever seen the musicians in Morrissey’s band? I mean look at the guitarist, bass player, and drummer these guys are gorgeous aren’t they? Morrissey definitely has one of the best looking bands in rock music these days.

I have a love and hate relationship with Morrissey. Sometimes he says really stupid things because he’s trying to be edgy sometimes Morrissey needs to think before he says stuff. I find Morrissey to be incredibly pretentious and he does things just to shock people. Other times I think Morrissey is one of the smartest men in the music business. I give Morrissey a lot of respect in terms of following his own artistic vision.

For seven long years after Morrissey’s 1997 album “Maladjusted” bombed he didn’t have a record deal. Finally, in the year 2004 Morrissey returned to form on “You Are The Quarry”. Morrissey’s voice never sounded better and the songs are simply incredible. Also “You Are The Quarry” is the most successful solo album of Morrissey’s career.

However, in 2006 Morrissey released “Ringleaders Of The Tormentors” and I must say the album is complete rubbish. The songs are uninspired lacking the lyrical content has a sense of levity. I was disappointed because I think “Ringleaders Of The Tormentors” is Morrissey’s worst solo album. What happened to Morrissey? Where is the man that sang “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful”? What about songs such as “Everyday Is Like Sunday” or “The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get”? On Morrissey’s 2006 album he appears lost and confused. Morrissey now claims he is no longer celibate and having sex. Maybe Morrissey’s mood changed because he’s happy again? I hope Morrissey’s next studio album will be a stronger and better.

Has Madonna Gone Back To Black?

The year 1994 for the first time in Madonna’s career she was in a slump. Madonna’s controversial coffee table book “Sex” had tarnished her career. The feminist community was upset with Madonna due to the sexually explicit photos in “Sex”. The mainstream media branded the pop legend as a washed up whore. Madonna was pushing the boundaries of sexuality exploring her sexual fantasies such as S&M, role playing, and lesbianism. Madonna was fighting the negativity and the misogyny.

It is interesting that Madonna will return to hip hop and R&B on her new album “Hard Candy”. Fans need to know this isn’t the first time Madonna has explored R&B music. Although Madonna’s record sales are still very strong internationally in North America her sales have dropped dramatically since the 1998 hit album “Ray Of Light”. Madonna desperately wants to obtain the interest of the youth music market so she is going back to R&B in an attempt to jack up her record sales.

Madonna’s last album “Confessions On A Dance Floor” was a moderate success selling 1 million copies sold in America. The sales are a disturbing trend for Madonna she’s losing the youth audience and market. However, Madonna’s 2003 album “American Life” was a flop by her standards the album only went gold. Madonna realizes she isn’t connecting with young music fans and on “Hard Candy” she hopes to reproduce the success of “Bedtime Stories”. So does Madonna only go black when her career is in a slump in North America?

Although the 1992 disc “Erotica” sold 2 million copies the North American media bashed Madonna and called her a washed up pop singer. In 1994 Madonna always the shrewd businesswoman decided to change her image, sound, and go back to black music. Bedtime Stories is an R&B album it was a deliberate attempt by Madonna to crossover and obtain the R&B audience.

Madonna’s risk paid off her music “Bedtime Stories” sold 3 million copies in the United States. Madonna also reached black radio stations and acquired a new demographic. One of the best songs on the CD is “I rather be your lover” a funky duet between Madonna and Meshell N’degeocello. I love this song!

In 1994 Madonna had an infamous interview with David Letterman and she was very vulgar and petulant. Madonna says the media was picking on her because she is a confident woman expressing her sexuality. The song “Human Nature” explores Madonna’s feelings about sexism in society. Madonna hired the best black producers she could find she enlisted the help of superstars Dallas Austin, Dave Hall, and Babyface. Babyface wrote the biggest hit song of Madonna’s career the duet “Take A Bow”. “Take A Bow” was number one on the Billboard charts for seven weeks. Madonna’s image changed once again she decided to be more vulnerable and more gentle. “Secret” was also a hit reaching number three on the Billboard singles charts.

I like Bedtime Stories because it proves Madonna is a versatile singer. Of course Madonna isn’t Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, or Whitney Houston she doesn’t have the mega pipes. Madonna does have a way of conveying emotion with her voice though. I believe Madonna is a decent singer she’s not the best but she’s not the worst either. On the sleeve for Bedtime Stories you see Madonna on a bed she appears fragile and delicate her makeup is a light shade of blue. Bedtime Stories gave Madonna a lot of credibility with the public and music critics.

Is A Kiss Just A Kiss?

Posted in Homosexuality, Lesbianism, Love, Men, Pop culture, Sexuality, TV, Thoughts, homoeroticism, homophobia, masculinity, media, women by orvillelloyddouglas on March 20th, 2008

I was talking to my friend on the phone the other day and he was watching You Tube. My friend was laughing at the Sasha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell kiss during an award show. I should point out we are both gay men. My friend urged me to watch the clip. I have to admit I laughed as well. I looked at the audience in the clip there were also laughing. Cohen and Ferrell are rolling around on the ground kissing but it was meant for shock value.

I began to question myself and wonder why is the clip funny? Why was I laughing as well? Am I homophobic too? Was the joke funny because it was just two comedians making a joke or is there a more deeper and subversive issue taking place here? Is society trying to say two men cannot have a loving, passionate, relationship with each other?

After all would the audience laugh if two attractive women were kissing? Would the audience have been so shocked? Was the audience really laughing at the kiss or was the audience laughing in attempt to hide their own fear and prejudices about male homosexuality?

Here is another clip from the gay storyline on the American soap opera As The World Turns. For the past six months Luke and Noah have been in an intense and passionate gay romance. Luke and Noah have only kissed two times in the past six months. The heterosexual couples on As The World Turns get to have sex so why can’t Luke and Noah? Everyone knows Luke and Noah are gay so were is the passion? The kiss between Noah and Luke although very short demonstrates the passion between them. You are not supposed to laugh when Luke and Noah kiss you are supposed to yearn that their relationship works and that their love survives and thrives. Fans of the show As The World Turns are upset at CBS because they believe homophobia is the real reason Luke and Noah haven’t been allowed to kiss more often.

Here is a third clip from the lesbian drama the L Word. The scene is from the first season of the L Word a passionate and erotic kiss between Jenny and Marina. You can tell from their body language that Jenny and Marina are yearning for each other. I know some people don’t like Jenny but I love Jenny! I kind of wish Marina was on the show more often. Marina was such a mysterious and amazing character. I thought the kiss here was very important it was the first time Jenny and Marina acknowledged they are sexually attracted to each other. The L Word is on Showtime in America and that’s a cable station so there is more freedom to explore lesbianism, love, passionate sex, breaking up, making up, and all that jazz.

DVD Review: Monster’s Ball Is The Movie Progress Or A Step Backwards?

First off let me say congratulations to Halle Berry for have a successful delivery and giving birth to a healthy baby girl. Halle must be thrilled right now she’s always wanted to have a child. I am sure Halle will be a wonderful loving and caring mother. Although some people think I don’t like Halle Berry this is simply not true. I do think Halle is a solid actress one of her performances was in the television film “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” for HBO.

Eighty three year old Ruby Dee was nominated for her performance in the film “American Gangster” she didn’t win. I was shocked this was Ruby Dee’s first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. I think it is such a disgrace that Ruby Dee wasn’t nominated for her electrifying performance in the 1961 classic film “A Raisin In The Sun.”

I started to think to myself what is Halle Berry’s appeal really all about? Obviously Berry is a very attractive woman I’m not blind. My questions refer more about Halle Berry’s acting abilities. Halle Berry definitely takes risks in her roles more risks then other black actresses. I applaud Halle for taking challenging roles for pushing the conventional thinking about black woman. Halle Berry’s most controversial and perhaps the one she won an Oscar for was for Monster’s Ball. Halle’s acting in Monster’s Ball is superb you see the layers, the complexity the feelings of anguish, sadness, grief, regret, pain, and finally acceptance of her character’s circumstances.

I also believe Halle Berry benefited at being at the right place at the right time. Prior to winning the best actress Oscar Berry was already the top actress of colour in Hollywood. The best actress Oscar win simply cemented Halle Berry’s A list status. The question is will another black woman ever win best actress Oscar? Does it even matter? Should we care? Or is the bigger issue the lack of dramatic roles for black women? The Oscars appear to me to be more about politics then about the actual craft of acting.

In the year 2002 the Academy had heard for years that talented black actors weren’t winning Oscars. The Academy killed two birds with one stone giving the best actor and actress Oscars to Denzel Washington and Halle Berry. I cringe when people say this is progress. I am not so sure. Denzel’s character in “Training Day” was a crooked cop. Halle Berry’s character in Monster’s Ball comes across as a whore willing to do anything to move up the social ladder.

A lot of the criticism for Monster’s Ball is the fact many people believe Halle’s character Leticia Musgrove should of went to a less sexually attractive actress. I will admit seeing Halle even without make up on she still looks glamorous even though she’s not supposed to be. It makes sense that Billy Bob Thorton’s character the racist prison guard Hank would want to have sex with Leticia. Although Hank is a racist he is still a red blooded man with raging hormones.

The part of Monster’s Ball I don’t believe is how quickly Hank “falls in love” with Leticia it doesn’t make sense to me. Was it love or just lust? How can a man in middle age suddenly transform so quickly from being a racist bigot to falling in love with a black woman? Why did Hank send his racist father to the nursing home after insulting Leticia? I doubt this would occur in the real world.

After Leticia’s husband is executed she is struggling to pay her bills, she is forced to leave her apartment, and Hank decides to help her. The question is why? What was Hank’s real motivation? I wondered why didn’t the movie explore this a bit more? Didn’t Leticia have any family or friends or any connection to the black community? Leticia appeared isolated from the black community?

Perhaps this was the screenwriter’s true motivation the fantasy that a black woman needs to be saved by a white man in order to have a better life? The screenwriter’s real motivation also is to cheapen a black actress force her to perform in a degrading and racist sex scene for shock value. Hank doesn’t appear to me as a noble or nice man he just looks like a racist old man that wanted to exploit and take advantage of a young black woman that was vulnerable and in danger.

Heath Ledger has a small but important role in Monster’s Ball his character Sonny is a sensitive young man he works with his father at the prison. Heath Ledger was an attractive guy he easily could of been Halle’s love interest in Monster’s Ball. I think Berry and Ledger becoming a romantic couple in this movie would of made more sense. Sonny is depressed he feels unloved he sleeps with prostitutes because he cannot make a connection to a woman in the mainstream world. Sonny also feels unloved by his racist father Hank. I think it would of made more sense if Heath Ledger’s character Sonny fell in love with Leticia because Sonny wasn’t a racist.

Billy Bob Thorton is simply too repugnant, unattractive, and old for the leading man role. It just didn’t seem right that Leticia would fall in love with such an unappealing old guy. Monster’s Ball would of been a more interesting movie if Sonny and Leticia fell in love because they are closer in age and Sonny appeared to to be more open about interracial romance. Sonny was just insecure and weak he followed his father Hank because he was desperate for his approval and love. Sonny wasn’t a racist. Sonny commits suicide right in front of his father Hank and his racist grandfather.

Leticia’s son also dies in a tragic accident. Next, the media and public focus shifts to the intense sex scene between Berry and Thorton. The sex scene seems to me purely for shock value a way to gain publicity for the film and it worked. I am sure millions of heterosexual men flocked to the movie theaters because they can see sex symbol Halle Berry naked in her full glory. Leticia Musgrove is reduced to the pernicious stereotype of being a whore. In Hollywood black women are stereotyped two ways the black woman is either the maid or the whore there is hardly ever any balanced perspective of black female sexuality in the movies.

The quandary is the sex scene reduces Berry’s character Leticia to a filthy whore. Leticia screeches the famous line “make me feel good” with a sneer. I can understand why some black men were so enraged with the sex scene. The question has to be asked does a black woman have to reduce herself in a licentious nude sex scene to win Oscar? Is this really progress?

When was the last time you seen Angelina Jolie in an intense interracial sex scene with With Smith? Can a leading black male actor have an explicit sex scene with a top white actress and win an Oscar? Can Terrence Howard have an intense sexual scene with Jennifer Aniston or Julia Roberts and receive critical acclaim? The answer is never because that’s never going to happen. Hollywood is all about white male dominance and white heterosexual men will never allow leading white women to have black male love interests.

Would a white actress that is considered beautiful have an intense, nude sex scene with a black man and receive critical acclaim? Charlize Theron and Will Smith have a movie coming out this year called Hancock and according to reports there is an interracial love theme in this movie. Hancock is going to be a comedy it is not a drama. Theron is an A list white actress actress she is considered to be one of the most beautiful and talented women in Hollywood. Will Smith is A list the most powerful man in Hollywood and he is black. The question is despite Will Smith’s crossover success will Hancock be a success with the black and white audiences? How intense will the movie’s interracial theme be?

The sex scene in Monster’s Ball was meant to be fractured to be awkward, to illustrate two anguished souls smashing together for comfort. At the same time Halle Berry’s sex appeal was exploited to lure in the male audience and create a buzz for the movie. Monster’s Ball reduces Leticia Musgrove to being a prostitute. Angela Bassett slammed the character Leticia Musgrove in a famous interview with Newsweek magazine. Bassett said she was not impressed with the character Leticia Musgrove because she believes it stereotypes black female sexuality.

The relationship between Leticia and Hank is basically a transaction it is a form of prostitution. Hank the older white man wants Leticia’s body because she is young and pretty. Hank will allow Leticia to live with him if she has sex with him. Since Leticia has no money she offers her body to Hank for shelter. Hank also has a higher social status then Leticia she benefits from this as well. But where is the love? I didn’t feel that either character truly loved each other. I will give Halle Berry credit for taking on a role that despite the controversy her acting is very strong you really do believe Leticia is in a lot of pain. Monster’s Ball was the last big dramatic movie role for a black actress and that was over seven years ago. The paucity of leading lady roles for black women is still very rare. Think about it, when was the last time you went to a movie theater and saw a black actress in a serious dramatic piece as the leading lady?

Is Male Sexuality Still Demonized And Taboo In North America?

The former governor of New York state Eliot Spitzer has resigned because he was identified as a client of an exclusive prostitution ring. The most shocking aspect is that Spitzer allegedly paid $80,000 dollars to pay for the services of a female. $80,000 that’s an incredible amount of money! Spitzer is a married father and he has three teenaged daughters.

I felt kind of sad watching Spitzer’s wife on CNN because the poor woman she looked depressed, shell shocked, embarrassed, and humiliated standing next to her cheating husband. I wondered why does Mrs. Spitzer even bother? Why is she still supporting her man when she can just leave him and divorce him? Some people view Spitzer’s fall from grace as justice because he created laws and acted morally superior. In the end Spitzer couldn’t even live up to his own impossible standards.

In North American politics in order to be successful in the political arena you have to live in the paradigm of the perfect nuclear  family. The politician has to be married, have beautiful intelligent children, and live in a big house and live the perfect heterosexual dream of true happiness. It is the  image that is idealized by the media and the North American culture. Spitzer’s demise shatters the myth of compulsory heterosexuality.

I am not blaming Spitzer’s wife for his actions but he didn’t resign just due to politics he resigned due to the issue of morality. Although Spitzer was a very powerful man at the end of the day he is just a man. Spitzer is married and a marriage is a contract. Marriage is about loving and respecting your partner but it is also an antiquated institution. Does monogamy even exist anymore? How are you going to know your partner isn’t cheating on you? You can’t be around your partner 24/7? You are never ever going to really know?

However, lets say if Spitzer was single would the public outcry still be so loud for his resignation? Let’s play devil’s advocate here for a bit. Let’s say if Spitzer and his wife were swingers and the public found out? Would the public still want Spitzer to resign? The anger the public has at Spitzer of course is due to the fact he betrayed the public’s trust, he used taxpayers money to fund his horny desires with a twenty two year old prostitute.

The other reason Spitzer resigned as the governor of New York state is because he broke the social code on adultery in a heterosexual marriage. Adultery is considered a moral sin even though most marriages break down due to adultery. Marriage is still placed on a pedestal in society as the ultimate expression of heterosexual love. The divorce rate for heterosexual marriage is at 50% for a reason people still have a problem discussing our sexual desires and sexual fantasies. Critics of Spitzer say he had to resign because he is a hypocrite. A third reason Spitzer resigned is due to the schizophrenic attitude North Americans still have about prostitution. Prostitution should be legalized if the sex occurs between consenting adults.

People view prostitution as an issue of morality and not as just a sexual transaction. The john wants to have no strings attached sex and the prostitute wants the money. Women in particular have a problem with prostitution they don’t understand or want to understand male sexuality. I think in this regard gay male sexuality is a bit more egalitarian. People wonder why gay male bathhouses exist? The reason gay male bathhouses exist is in the past gay male sexuality was considered a criminal act and a social taboo. There is still discrimination against gay men in relation to us expressing our homosexuality. The battle for equal rights isn’t over. The gay male bathhouse is also a social place, a safe place, an environment where gay men and bisexual men are able to be free with our sexuality without judgment from the heterosexist matrix.

I must admit there are also some puritanical hypocritical gay men out there that look down on bathhouses as an example of hedonism. Gay male bathhouses are also male only spaces because of a variety of factors and issues. Although there are female bathhouse theme nights for lesbians or for women that want to engage in sexual activity with other women. Female bathhouse nights are actually growing in popularity in North America. I remember one year before gay pride I was walking by a popular bathhouse and there were hundreds of women outside trying to get into the female bathhouse. Women also want to have freedom to express their sexuality. Lesbians, bisexual women and even heterosexual women should be able to engage in sex without the judgment of the Mythical Norm. Gay men, closeted men, bisexual men, and yes even sometimes married men visit the gay bathhouse for casual sexual encounters.

The attitudes towards male homosexuality have relaxed over the years but the gay bathhouses still exist since the nineteenth century for a reason. The reason gay bathhouses exist is because the business owners know men will pay to enter the bathhouse . In order for patrons to enter a gay bathhouse men have to pay a fee for either a locker or a room. It may not sound politically correct but sometimes men just want to have no strings attached sex. Sometimes men we are just horny and want to get our rocks off on a Friday or Saturday night.

Gay men know the hunger, the desire, the need, for physical sex. The quandary for heterosexual men such as Governor Spitzer is straight men in North America don’t have the same access to sexual freedom that gay men have. North American heterosexual society places impossible standards on straight men. Heterosexual men are supposed to be virtuous and pristine.

In North America there are swinger clubs that exist for heterosexual couples that want to break the chains of compulsory heterosexuality and engage in anonymous sexual activity. But let’s say the straight man suggests to his female partner that he wants to join a swinger club but his wife or girlfriend refuses? I am certain there are heterosexual men that attempt to talk about their sexual desires with their wives and girlfriends. The straight men feel rejected by their female partners and looks at other options to explore their sexuality. What are men supposed to do?

Next, some men feel that since their girlfriends or wives are against them having sex outside the relationship pornography is a better alternative. The pornography business is more profitable then mainstream Hollywood for a reason. So why is there this reticence about pornography? Pornography is simply consenting adults engaging in sexual acts on video. Pornography is a manifestation of our sexual desires it is outlet that exists for people to explore human sexuality.

Some women are also against pornography for religious, political, and moral reasons. Some women feel ashamed or upset if their boyfriends or husbands watch pornography . For some illogical reason some women actually compare themselves to the women in the porn movies. I wonder why? Don’t women get it? Men love sex! Although a man may love his wife or girlfriend he’s always going to be glancing or looking at other women. It doesn’t mean the man will cheat but it does mean the man has a pulse.

Some women forbid their male partners from even watching porn on DVD in their own homes. What are heterosexual men supposed to do? Let’s say the heterosexual man doesn’t want his wife around when he’s having sex with the woman he secretly desires? Maybe the heterosexual man wants to have sex with a group of women? Maybe the straight man’s fantasy is to have an orgy or have a different woman perform a different sexual act on him? Perhaps this is the fear the silent barrier that men are conditioned by society to not discuss or talk about male sexuality?

The issue the North American media consistently ignores is heterosexual men have two fantasy women in their lives. The wife is the woman in the public sphere she is supposed to be respectable, loving, she is the woman that the man shows off at workplace events, weddings, funerals, conventions. The wife is the woman the man also talks about at work with his co workers.

The second woman the heterosexual man desires is the whore. Some men wish their wives were whores in the bedroom. The whore is the woman that is the man’s carnal fantasy. However, since heterosexuality is still so repressed in North America some straight men obtain the services of prostitutes to have their fantasies fulfilled. Maybe another reason heterosexual men like female prostitutes is the female prostitute is willing and able and knows no limits our boundaries to please the man.

The female prostitute is an outlet due for heterosexual men’s sexual desires. The prostitute is the woman men secretly want but there is a moral code against the female hooker too. The female hooker is scorned by other women as the culprit for destroying marriages. Is this really true? I don’t think its the female prostitute’s fault that a marriage falls apart. I think it is so unfair that people unload their own guilt about sex on the female prostitute. The female prostitute is simply doing her job she is fulfilling a service for the straight man that wants to get his rocks off.

Heterosexual swinger clubs are exploding across North America the popularity continues to grow. The catch is single heterosexual men are not permitted to attend swinger conventions alone. The man has to have a female partner in order to enter the Swinger clubs. It is clear that straight people too don’t just want to have sex with the same person all the time. Could the swinger club have been an option for a high profile person such as Eliot Spitzer? I doubt it. People hold high profile politicians to a higher standard then the rest of society. Since Spitzer is a public figure perhaps he couldn’t take his wife to swinger club? I wonder this is a hypothetical question would the public be more mad at Spitzer if he was a swinger and not a john?

Some straight men just want an orgasm they just want a woman to perform oral sex or just have vaginal sex without interaction without judgment. Spitzer could of went on the internet and found a woman to have a sexual encounter with? Maybe Spitzer could of asked his wife to join in? Some heterosexual men just want to screw an attractive woman they don’t want to get to know the woman or love her. One option of course is the heterosexual men can visit singles bars or clubs. The next issue relates to ageism. It is well known most bars kind of have an age limit in the sense if a man is perhaps close to age 50 at a straight bar he might be looked down upon.

However, according to the information straight men have told me this can be complicated. The straight man has to buy the woman a drink, he has to talk to the woman convince her to have sex with him. Sometimes straight men visit straight bars and they don’t get any action after the bar or club closes. So what is the option for heterosexual men that are sexually frustrated? The straight man turns to prostitution because although he may pay a fee he still is able to express his sexuality without judgment with a woman he finds sexually attractive.

Gay men are different we know if we visit a gay bar or club and we don’t connect with another guy the night isn’t over for us. The funny thing about gay bars and clubs is so many guys have so much attitude. Yet at two in the morning the same guy with attitude at the club is a different person at the bathhouse. I wonder why this occurs?

Another point to consider is gay and heterosexual men can make a distinction between love and sex. For some reason some women cannot. Sex and love are two completely different things. Some women view sex and love simultaneously and there is a connection. For some men engaging in sex with a woman outside of a relationship is simply about about fulfilling a personal physical carnal need. Love is something different it is about devotion, respect, intimacy, an emotional connection to another human being. Maybe some men are bored with their partners? Maybe the partner isn’t engaging in sexual acts that turns the man on? Maybe the man just wants to have sex with someone else try something new?

A quandary in North America is male sexuality is still demonized. Men are made to feel as though tapping into our sexual thoughts, our sexual desires is filthy, wrong, and disgusting. Instead of attempting to understand male sexuality the negative stereotypes are reinforced. For example, a man may love his wife or girlfriend. The man still has issues of temptation if men had the opportunity to get away with it men would easily cheat on their partners. If a man sees a chocolate cake on the table and he’s told not to eat it. Guess what? The man may not be able to resist temptation and eat the chocolate cake anyway.

So why is there this resistance to legalizing prostitution? Why does the invisible code still exist? Prostitution is basically legal anyway. Pick up the newspaper flip to the classified section. A lot of alternative newspapers make their bread and butter through the prostitution ads for services such as massages.

The bottom line is married men pay for sex. In fact, even single men pay for sex. People don’t want to think about prostitution they imagine the client of the prostitute must be some loser, some unattractive or elderly man. Spitzer is only 48 years old he easily could of found an intern to screw or join a swinger club with his wife but he chose to express his sexuality with a hooker due to lust. The lust of the flesh did Spitzer in. Spitzer was client number nine and some stories suggest he paid in cash up to almost $80,000 for the services of a hooker.

People don’t want to believe their father, brother, uncle, husband, best friend, cousin, grandpa, next door neighbor, the teacher, the crossing guard, the star athlete, police man, judge, fire fighter, or a top politician uses escort services? Who do people think are paying for these services? Women think it has to be somebody else, some other stranger’s man that’s paying for sex. It couldn’t possibly be their lover their man. It is very easy for men to hire a prostitute during their lunch break for a quickie and then return home to their wives or girlfriends at the end of the day.

Why is everyone trying to deny prostitution exists? In the Netherlands, Germany, New South Wales in Australia and other Western nations prostitution is legalized. It is clear there are men out there that are always going to pay for sex. So why isn’t prostitution legalized? In Western Europe and New South Wales in Australia, there aren’t social problems due to the legalization of prostitution. So why is North America so behind the curve? Prostitution is the world’s oldest profession so why don’t people just get their heads out of the sand and legalize it? It seems to me this relates to the issue of morality. North America is too puritanical in relation to sex people still buy into the belief that people must conform to monogamy even though everyone knows people that don’t. But the fact remains millions of North American men are paying for sex so why ignore the fact prostitution exists?Maybe if prostitution was legalized the social barriers around human sexuality would break down in North America?

CD Review: Discipline

The atrocious and ludicrous reviews I have read about Janet Jackson’s stunning new album “Discipline” makes me cringe. It is obvious some journalists have no objectivity and clearly are unprofessional. A critic needs to think about the audience and demographics an artist is trying to reach. Why don’t some music journalists just be honest and state that they hate Janet Jackson? Some critics are too esoteric they have this pretentious attitude that their views are the only perspectives that are acceptable.  The Entertainment Weekly review of Janet’s latest CD “Discipline” was just lazy journalism and has zero credibility. Some people just don’t have any perspective and are treating Janet Jackson so unfairly.

When Madonna was extremely sexual in the early 1990s with “Erotica” she encountered a major backlash from the mainstream press. Madonna is a shrewd business woman she transformed her image in order to maintain “respectability” and her popularity by “softening” her image. People also immediately forget Madonna also had a bomb 2003 “American Life” only went gold. I think Madonna became more boring and less relevant. The white media praised Madonna for toning down her sexual image and claimed she was “maturing”.

I think the anger the white media have against Janet Jackson is misplaced. The black press has always been more balanced in their views about Janet Jackson. 20 Y.O. was a crappy album and I think even Janet Jackson would admit this. However, Janet Jackson isn’t “withdrawing” or “softening” her image at all for anybody. When male singers sing explicit songs nobody says they are acting desperate or trying too hard to be sexual. So why are different standards applied to female singers? It appears to me the media is still extremely sexist against women expressing their sexuality. Some people are uncomfortable with female sexuality but that’s their problem. Janet Jackson is a grown ass woman and she has the freedom to express herself anyway she wants.

In fact, Janet is continuing on her own path singing the songs she wants to sing she’s not letting anyone tell her what to do. I applaud Janet Jackson for refusing to allow anyone to stop her from expressing herself through her music. The media need to stop complaining about Janet Jackson and get with the program. Janet Jackson has always been a very provocative artist.

One of the most important aspects of any Janet Jackson CD are the numerous interludes this is Janet’s trademark. Some people complain the interludes are “boring” but where have these people been all these years? Janet Jackson’s albums always have interludes she is interested in providing some context and perspective to her songs. “Discipline” is Janet’s strongest album this decade. Many artists have attempted to copy Janet but there is one and only Janet Jackson. I think the interludes allows the listener to understand Janet’s personality better.

There are times on this album that Janet sounds like her brother Michael. The ballad “Can’t B good” reminds me of a Michael Jackson song. Janet is vulnerable on this song questioning herself about a relationship that didn’t work. Sometimes when Janet sings she reminds me of her older brother. Another wicked track “Never Letchu Go” Janet vocals are strong. The ballad “Greatest X” is about heartbreak it is a beautiful song. The S&M song “Discipline” is a mellifluous slow burn that some conservative people may not appreciate since the lyrics are steamy and sexy . Another ballad I love is “Curtains” the song has a wonderful beat. The mid tempo song “The 1″ with Janet and Missy Elliott is so playful, cute, and cool I love the funky beat.

I can admit due to my own ingrained sexism since I was raised in the Occidental world that sexuality is viewed as being reserved for young people. If Janet Jackson wants to sing about having multiple orgasms then she has the right to. Thank goodness Janet’s enjoying sex and she’s just letting us know about it. If Janet Jackson wants to moan about masturbation then more power to her. If Janet wants to sing about the various sexual positions she has sex then good for her. We all masturbate, we all have sex, and we all try various different sexual positions. I don’t see the big deal here.

Sometimes I wonder if there is a subversive message that the mainstream is fearful of black female sexuality? Since the days of slavery black women have had a tug of war of being viewed as licentious or being pristine. Why can’t a black woman be confident about her sexuality and not be depicted as a loose or fallen woman? I don’t think Janet is stereotyping black women at all by discussing sex and I don’t think its just a marketing tactic either.

Male sexuality is never scorned men are granted permission to discuss sex until we die. Why are there double standards for women? Sex is beautiful and America is still a puritanical nation that attempts to force female sexuality into certain categories. Janet Jackson is 41 years old and girlfriend works out she has an amazing body. Janet takes care of herself she has a right to flaunt her sexuality if she wants to.

It is obvious to the discerning eye that some people in the media have an axe to grind and a vendetta against Janet Jackson because she’s a Jackson. Thankfully for all Janet Jackson fans she has learned from the mistakes from Damita Jo, and 20 Y.O. I believe Damita Jo is an underrated album but the media crucified Janet Jackson and branded her with the Scarlet Letter after the 2004 Super Bowl. Damita Jo according to the RIAA has shipped platinum and sold about 1 million copies. 20 Y.O. was a flop it was only certified gold. 20 Y.O. was definitely a sloppy album with only a few solid songs such as “Take Care”, “So Excited”, “Get It On Me”, and “Enjoy”.

Janet has made some drastic changes and I am glad she has the courage to move forward in her career . Discipline is a blend between the old Janet Jackson sound and a new fresh R&B sound. First, Janet’s long time producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are gone. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are wonderful producers but their time has passed. Janet has worked with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for over twenty years and her sound was starting to become stale and dry. It was a shrewd move on Janet’s part to hire producers such as Johnta Austin, Rodney Jerkins, The Dream, Tricky Stewart, Stargate, Shea Taylor, Ne Yo, and her boyfriend Jermaine Dupri to work on the album. Janet has also switched record labels she left Virgin for Island. Virgin America disrespected Janet Jackson when they didn’t campaign hard enough to generate publicity for Janet’s last two albums Damita Jo, and 20 Y.O.

Jackson is a legend and people need to let the Super Bowl incident die and move on. One thing I don’t understand why Justin Timberlake never received the same treatment as Janet Jackson? Justin was the aggressor he rips off Janet’s top yet Janet gets all the grief. Once again, the white man is the stud while the black woman is scorned. The mainstream media are demonstrating the pernicious racism and sexism against black women. Why is Janet still being treated like she is Hester Prynne? I respect Janet because unlike some stars she doesn’t air her dirty laundry to the press. For example, Janet was married for nine years yet kept her marriage secret. Janet is an icon and she deserves our respect for all her hard work in transforming pop culture for black entertainers. Janet seems so humble and so sweet and has a very interesting personality I have always found her to be mysterious. Janet also seems to genuinely love her fans she comes across as a real person unlike certain pop stars.

Janet Jackson is very rare in the entertainment industry she has a very famous brother Michael Jackson and yet she emerged from Michael’s shadow to become an international superstar. Janet’s father Joe Jackson pushed Janet into becoming a singer in the year 1982 and finally in 1985 she fired Joe and became independent. The rest is history. Every superstar has times in their career when their record sales goes down nobody stays on top forever.

So many young female singers such as Beyonce, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Rihanna, and Ciara have all been influenced by Janet Jackson. Janet Jackson was the first modern black female pop star that had the hard baseline grooves, mixed with the pop sound. Janet has evolved over the years. The bottom line is Janet Jackson is going to talk about sex and she doesn’t care what the media or public has to say. I think this CD “Discipline” demonstrates Janet is very confident about herself and this is a very effervescent CD.

The album is mostly club bangers and mid tempo songs but this is Janet Jackson’s strength. I wonder what some reviewers want from Janet? Janet Jackson has never been about saving the world or about the environment. Janet has already had hit songs about racism, homophobia, sexism, family discord, and domestic violence.

The first five songs are club bangers “Feedback”, “Rollercoaster”, “Luv”, “Rock With U”, and “2nite”. I also love the mid tempo songs such as “What’s Ur name”, “So Much Betta”. I hope Janet decides to go on tour this year. The production is incredible, this album represents the real Janet Jackson. Discipline is definitely a solid CD and I definitely recommend that people purchase a copy. Welcome back Janet Jackson!

Amelie Mauresmo A Woman At A Crossroads

Posted in Lesbianism, Sexuality, Sports, Thoughts, tennis, women by orvillelloyddouglas on February 25th, 2008

amelie-mauresmo.gif

French Tennis superstar Amelie Mauresmo admitted to the French sports magazine L’Equipe recently that she is considering retirement. I have feelings of sadness when I heard about Amelie’s frustration with her career. I wonder if Amelie is satisfied? After all Amelie is now a tennis champion and her place in women’s tennis history is secure. For a long time the media labeled Amelie as a consistent choker unable to win the grand slams. Amelie even wondered prior to 2006 if she ever would become a champion.

Amelie’s ranking has dropped significantly she is currently ranked number twenty nine in the world. Amelie had a horrible 2007 she only won one WTA title an event in Antwerp Belgium, lost in the fourth round at Wimbledon, and she also skipped the US Open. It is important to point out Amelie wasn’t injured when she skipped the US Open she decided not to play due to lack of motivation. I think Amelie should perhaps limit her schedule to keep herself fresh this year. The WTA tour is a real grind the women travel all over the world to play tennis. I think Amelie should concentrate on only the big events to try to acquire more ranking points. I also am suggesting to Amelie perhaps she can play some tier III events to boost her confidence. If Amelie can win the smaller events maybe this will give her some mental strength back?

One of the complaints tennis fans have about Amelie is her tendency to give up when things get tough. Amelie is a champion she has proven she is no flake she is for real. All tennis champions have times in their career when things aren’t going well. Venus, Serena, Maria, Justine, Lindsay, they all have had droughts it happens. I am not a professional athlete and I am sure Amelie’s disappointing results must be frustrating for her.

However, I also notice Amelie has been playing a more defensive game in the past year. Amelie is at her best when she is charging the net serving and volleying not when she is on the baseline chipping back slice backhands. Where is the aggression from Amelie? Why isn’t Amelie returning back to a more assertive game that carried her to two grand slam titles in 2006? I remember Amelie used to be fearless on the court blasting powerful forehands, backhands, hitting huge serves and knocking off volleys.

I believe Amelie can compete with the Williams Sisters, Justine Henin, and Maria Sharapova she’s got the game. It is foolish for the mainstream media to count Amelie Mauresmo out she is the kind of player that has the experience to win slams. Amelie can be very dangerous if her game does get on track and she connects with the ball. All Amelie needs to do is win some events and her confidence will be restored.

I always have a soft spot for Amelie Mauresmo because she is the first player in the current generation to declare she is a lesbian. Unlike the male tennis players the women’s tennis tour is so much more mature because women seem to be more understanding around issues of sexuality. I am not suggesting some heterosexual women cannot be homophobic because this is definitely not the case. However, I also believe that men force other males to remain in a rigid form of masculinity. The gay male tennis players live in fear due to heterosexual men.

Where are the gay male tennis players? Why are the gay men on the ATP Tour cowards? There have been rumours for years about certain Spanish and French males tennis players hiding their homosexuality. However, there has never been any clear confirmation that the Spaniards or the French men are gay. If the lesbians can come out and become tennis champions why can’t the gay male tennis players come out too? Tennis is not a team sport professional tennis is an individual sport. Wouldn’t it be easier for a gay male tennis player to come out in tennis then a team sport? So why are the gay male tennis pros still reticent and the women are so courageous?

The women on the WTA Tour don’t that care Amelie is a lesbian in fact they respect Amelie so much and like her. Amelie has never lied or denied she is a lesbian and soon the attention of the media returned to her tennis. Although I am a gay man I think it takes so much courage to come out and Amelie came out to the world.

The WTA Tour has a history of lesbianism dating back to the 1960s. Former Wimbledon and Us Open champion Maria Bueno and American Darlene Hard were lesbian lovers.  Virginia Wade the last British woman to ever win Wimbledon in 1977  has been rumored for years being a closeted lesbian. It wasn’t until the 1980 when Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King came out of the closet as lesbian tennis champions. At the 2006 Australian Open the Australian player Renee Stubbs came out to the Melbourne newspaper The Age. Stubbs disclosed that she used to date American Lisa Raymond. Spaniard and former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez is a lesbian and she used to date American Gigi Fernandez back in the 1990s. There are rumors that Jana Novotna and Hana Mandlikova used to be lesbian lovers. In fact, another rumor is that Russian player Svetlana Kuznetsova is a lesbian and the Australian tennis player Samantha Stosur is also a lesbian.

I think it is important when the champions come out of the closet because it demonstrates gay people can compete at the highest levels in professional sports. So where are the gay male tennis champions? The late great Bill Tilden can’t be the only gay man to ever play the game? There simply has to be more gay male tennis champions? So why are men immature and cowards and women aren’t?

There has been some homophobia on the WTA tour when Amelie came out in 1999 I remember Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis were so homophobic making fun of Amelie’s appearance and claiming she wasn’t feminine enough. If you look at Amelie Mauresmo she is more feminine then Davenport that’s for sure. Aren’t women tennis players athletes? So why the double standard in relation to male and female athletes? Ana Ivanovic said it best you can’t be wearing make up and trying to look sexy when you are sweating on the tennis court.

Tracy Austin the termagant tennis analyst also made a homophobic comment during the 2006 US OPEN on USA Network. I was so disgusted with Austin comparing Amelie to the new tennis ingenue Maria Sharapova. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder I don’t understand the big deal about Sharapova’s looks? Big deal, Maria is tall and blonde and yes she’s a solid player but so is Amelie. Amelie has a gentle side to her personality she is actually quite slender also. There are plenty of women on the WTA tour that are bigger then Amelie Mauresmo.

Amelie’s breakthrough year was 2006 she was the top player in the world and won the Australian Open and Wimbledon championships. Amelie’s confidence is gone she hasn’t fully mentally recovered from the appendix surgery she had last year. I still believe Amelie can win more slams but it is all up to her.

The French Open commences in May but the pressure is so intense in France for Amelie to win the event. Amelie always crumbles under the pressure in Paris she has never advanced beyond the French Open quarterfinals in her career. Belgian Justine Henin has won the French Open four times in the past five years. Amelie is one of the few women that can defeat Justine on the clay. I hope Amelie continues to play she shouldn’t retire at the age of twenty eight I still believe she can win another slam.

I Hope Neo Ned Is Released In 2008?

I have heard some rumors that the controversial independent drama Neo Ned may be released on DVD in 2008? People are constantly complaining that black actresses never get serious dramatic roles. I think it is very sad that such an important film hasn’t found distribution. According to some discussions on the internet the controversial issue about the “Hitler factor” and the interracial romance theme is the reason “Neo Ned” hasn’t been released. I guess I am waiting in vain perhaps? Oh well, I hope I can see this film on DVD one day hopefully sometime this year?

Gabrielle’s character Rachel is a complex, intelligent, and depressed young black woman she believes the soul of Hitler is trapped in her body. Rachel is a survivor of sexual abuse and she only actually “pretends” that the soul of Hitler is in her body.

Yes, Neo Ned is a bit out there but this is a thought provoking independent film. Jeremy Renner and Gabrielle Union have both received incredible reviews for their outstanding performances in Neo Ned. Neo Ned has received some glowing reviews from the Los Angeles Times, Variety, International Herald Tribune, and other publications.

Neo Ned isn’t just a film about a white male Neo Nazi falling in love with a black woman that believes the soul of Hitler is in her body. The film appears to be challenging and thought  provoking.  Visit www.neoned.com and read the reviews for yourself. Neo Ned is about two damaged souls, two people that first meet in a mental institution and fall in love. Although in the end Ned and Rachel realize they may be too different to make the romance work.

If Neo Ned is only released on DVD then I will purchase the movie anyway. I just think its a sad that Neo Ned hasn’t found distribution yet? I have hope that Neo Ned will hopefully be released this this year.

DVD Review: My Beautiful Laundrette

Posted in DVD Review, Film, Gender, Homosexuality, Love, Pop culture, Race, Sexuality, Thoughts, culture, homoeroticism, interracial relationships, media by orvillelloyddouglas on February 8th, 2008

my-beautiful-laundrette.jpg

Monday afternoon my friend suggested I borrow his DVD copy of the film “My Beautiful Laundrette”. I was hesitant at first because I thought the film was going to be another classic white savior movie. I notice a theme in a lot of interracial films that the person of colour always needs empowerment from the white person. Some interracial films present the false notion that interracial relationships are fighting racism. However, some interracial relationships are based on racism because of the racist assumptions once race has about another.

Whiteness is depicted as better in many interracial movies and as superior to communities of colour. The subversive vein of racism is in order for people of colour to have better lives we need white partners.

The person of colour’s family life is often framed as originating from an oppressive culture and the European culture is presented as the only solution. White culture is depicted as open minded and perfect. “My Beautiful Laundrette” challenges this racist notion that communities of colour are always oppressive. It is so wonderful to actually see the reverse in “My Beautiful Laundrette”.

In “My Beautiful Laundrette” the South Asian families are actually just as prejudiced as the white British people. The main Pakistani family in the film view lower class white people as inferior and lazy unwilling to work hard to move up the social ladder. I am happy to announce that “My Beautiful Laundrette” is definitely a forward thinking kind of movie.

The film is about a young Pakistani man Omar he lives with his father on welfare in 1980s London. The movie is set in Margaret Thatcher’s England where the racial tensions between the white British community and South Asians are intense. Omar dreams of a better life his father is an alcoholic and his mother is deceased. Omar’s uncle Nasser introduces Omar to a new life and his ambition grows he wants the capitalist dream of material wealth. Omar believes money will give him happiness.

Omar first starts out washing cars but persuades his Uncle Nasser to let him run his own laundrette. One evening Omar meets up with an old friend Johnny a young white British man. Johnny is unemployed, unhappy, and homeless. Johnny hangs out with a bunch of street punks that get involved in crimes, use drugs and are disillusioned about life in London. The young white men are upset that their lives aren’t better and make South Asians the targets and scapegoats for their own unhappiness.

The South Asian community in London are working hard to rise in British society. The young street punks feel left behind and have a sense of entitlement due to the fact they are British.

Omar needs another Uncle Salim he is the villain in the film he gets Omar involved in dirty deeds and is emotionally abusive to Omar. Omar persuades Johnny to help him fix up the Laundrette and gives Johnny a job. Johnny’s self esteem grows he now has a purpose in life and he is conflicted about hanging out with his punk friends that are miserable, racist, and anti social. Omar and Johnny’s feelings for each other grow and they fall in love.

The aspect of the movie I loved the most is  the gay romance is not viewed as a social problem. It is still so rare to see a movie about a South Asian gay man that is the star of the film and being gay is not a source of conflict. “My Beautiful Laundrette” just presents male homosexuality as a part of life. Omar just happens to be gay he doesn’t make a big deal about it and neither should the audience. Gordon Warnecke gives a confident and strong performance as the protagonist Omar. Daniel Day Lewis shines as Omar’s lover Johnny.

The gay romance is tame by twenty first century standards there are a few romantic kisses to illustrate Omar and Johnny are lovers. I love the fact that Omar and Johnny have intimacy to their relationship. Far too often gay movies either conceal the gay romance or are too explicit that it destroys a film. “My Beautiful Laundrette” has a balance that is so charming and cute. Omar and Johnny have a sweet tenderness to their relationship you can tell they are in love just by the way they gently hug or look intensely at each other.

I believe “My Beautiful Laundrette” is indeed superior to other so called big budget gay films that have been released in the last few years. My perspective is if “My Beautiful Laundrette” was made in North America the whole movie would of been worse to treat homosexuality as a social issue. It is simply incredible that “My Beautiful Laundrette” was released in 1985 because the movie is so current and so real.

The main themes about the movie deal with cultural clashes between the South Asian immigrants and white Anglo Saxon population, identity politics, and also class. Class is a main theme in the movie. Omar begins to rise in the class system and starts to become a bit arrogant as well.

Meanwhile Uncle Nasser is having an affair with a white woman Rachel and his daughter Tania and his wife know about this. Tania is depressed she doesn’t want to live in a patriarchal family and she wishes she had more to do with her life.My only criticism of the film is I think the Tania character should of had more screen time the issue of sexism and misogyny was explored to a certain extent. I wanted to know more why Tania was so unhappy and I wished her character was more developed. I feel Tania is just a plot device in the film but maybe this was in the intention of the screenwriter.

Tania confronts Rachel at the opening of the Laundrette and Rachel dumps uncle Nasser. I think Tania is a catalyst for change in the film. Johnny’s friends attack him in the third act of the movie because they feel he is betraying them by trying to become a productive citizen. Uncle Salim is also attacked by the street punks. Tania leaves her family and moves on with her life she wants Johnny to go with her. Johnny refuses Tania’s advances and says he loves Omar and he will not leave him.

Uncle Nasser confronts his fears that his ephemeral relationship with Rachel was doomed because he is so unhappy with his marriage. Omar’s father wants Omar to attend college. Omar and Johnny make it out in the end and remain a couple. I absolutely love this fact that neither Omar or Johnny died.

I cringe every single time a gay movie is released and one of the protagonists has to die. Of course in real life relationships don’t always work and this has to be explored on film. However, in cinema there is a predilection that gay romances are doomed because the subliminal message is gay romance is inferior to heterosexual love. I recommend “My Beautiful Laundrette” to anyone willing to give a movie a chance that deals with gay love in a funny, clever, intelligent, and serious manner.

Black Lesbians In Pop Culture, Is It Sexist If Men Are Curious?

Posted in Film, Gender, Lesbianism, Pop culture, Sexuality, TV, Thoughts, arts, media, women by orvillelloyddouglas on February 2nd, 2008

tasha-the-l-word.jpgshe-hate-me-lesbian-scene.jpg

I was watching Spike Lee’s movie “She Hate Me” the other day and one scene I really found interesting was the sex scene between Kerry Washington and Dania Ramirez. I was intrigued, as a gay man I rarely ever see women of colour in mainstream films have an erotic lesbian scene together. Even in gay culture lesbians are invisible and black lesbians are displaced due to race, gender, and sexuality.

Spike Lee’s film “She Hate Me” didn’t really explore the relationship between Washington and Ramirez’s characters though. My perspective is both women were used as a plot device for Anthony Mackie’s lead character. I won’t spoil the ending of the movie but it was completely unrealistic. I think a mainstream movie should be made that explores a romantic relationship between two black women. I wonder if this will ever happen?

Sure, I’ve seen straight porn movies that have lesbian scenes but those films are just not realistic or authentic. I already know how lesbians have sex but I think in “She Hate Me” was the first time I saw a romantic and erotic sex scene between women of colour. I found it interesting. Does this make me sexist? I wonder?

I have looked at lesbian erotic magazines before though out of curiosity. However, I think this was the first time I had ever seen an intense sex scene between two women of colour. The lesbian sex scene is rare because it is a lesbian sex scene between two women of colour.

I also was on You Tube the other day and it showed two gorgeous black women making out. I have read comments on various websites that some lesbians were offended by Spike Lee’s movie in the depictions of lesbians being sexually attracted to men. I understand the concerns. However, Kerry Washington’s character in “She Hate Me” clearly was bisexual and not a lesbian and she is sexually attracted to men.

We rarely get to see black lesbians in mainstream films. The last major movie with a black lesbian was Queen Latifah’s character Cleo in the hit indie film “Set It Off”. “Set It Off” I believe jump started Queen’s career. Although rumours still exist about Queen Latifah’s true sexual orientation I thought her performance as the butch aggressive lesbian Cleo was excellent. I think it was brave on Queen Latifah’s part to take on this role.

I would like to see more movies and television shows with black lesbian characters where black lesbians are the lead. I know that Tasha a black lesbian woman is a secondary character on the Showtime Lesbian television show the L Word. However, why did it take the producers until the fourth season to include a black lesbian? We already had a black gay series Noah’s Arc on television.

I think it is time for black lesbians to shine on the silver screen or on television with their own series. According to media reports Meagan Good is going to star in a film “Sundays In Fort Greene” this year and her character is a lesbian. I am so pleased that Meagan is willing to take on this role.I think it really shows the Meagan is willing to stretch her acting skills and diversity her roles.

You Tube isn’t porn or anything but I thought the kissing scene between the two women was sensual. I have to admit I don’t know much about lesbian sex. I do remember seeing two female friends have sex in front of me during high school though at a Halloween party. I have noticed in the lesbian community some lesbians are really upset if men say we find lesbian sex erotic or interesting. So my question is it exploiting lesbian sexuality for men to be curious about lesbians in pop culture?
