I agree. Don’t they look strikingly similar?
I can’t even think how it was possible that Newton wasn’t the first actress they called when they decided to make the movie…
Yes that’s why I was so shocked Angelina Jolie got the part. I immediately thought Thandie Newton should of gotten the role. Thandie is well known, she looks extremely similar to Mariane Pearl. Thandie is also a solid actress she would of been perfect for the part. I don’t understand why Hollywood felt the need to go to the extreme and cast Angelina Jolie it makes absolutely no sense.
hmmnnn…weird indeed..thandie looks like her…much more than jolie…but then again, that would make too much sense for an industry that thought it okay to cast keanu reeves as the last samurai…the main geisha in memoirs of a geisha being played by a chinese star…obviously, asians all look alike and the audience wouldn’t know any better…and mine and januaries favorite-elizabeth taylor as cleopatra…next they’ll do a film about nzinga and cast charlize theron…afterall, both nzinga and theron are from the southern part of africa right?…someone should do a film about the ridiculousness that goes on in hollywood…a farce…i need a good laugh…
but you know, this pearl character doesn’t really ‘look’ ‘black’…i would suspect some ‘black’ blood only because of the hair and maybe some of the pigmentation in the skin…once she said cuban, i’d understand her look…i would actually wonder if she did identify only as black…or kept bringing it up too much…i know we come in a many a hue…but if she doesn’t want to be black, she ain’t gotta be black;)…
You definitely have a point Pearl is definitely “not” just black she also has white and Chinese ancestry as well. But I can tell by looking at Pearl that she definitely has some black heritage. I think since Thandie is also biracial but also looks very similar to Pearl and Thandie is such an amazing actress she would perfect for the part. Although Thandie is well known remember she was in Norbit last year. I believe Norbit is well beneath Thandie’s talent but the sister has got to work. I wish Thandie would get the big roles and that major breakthrough. I thought Thandie’s performance in Crash was incredible she deserved an Oscar nomination for that strong performance. It was interesting that Thandie won the BAFTA award for best supporting actress for her role in Crash yet the USA film industry ignored her incredible performance in Crash.
I totally agree with all points made here…and I also can’t believe she wasn’t the first person called!
Just thought I should mention Thandie also dated Brad Pitt in the early 1990s. So I am sure Brad Pitt knows about Thandie’s talent. Pitt is one of the executive producers of “A Mighty Heart”.
i can believe that thandie wasn’t the first person called. why can’t any of you?
racial ambiguity notwithstanding, pearl wanted to get her story told, period. the bottom line is star power, clout and money — not talent. you need the star power to draw attention to the movie (jolie — who isn’t 100% white, anyway — has an Oscar), you need the clout to be able to greenlight a film and make it bankable (that’s where jolie and pitt come in) and you need money to market it.
is thandie black when it’s convienient? yup — just like quite a few other racially ambiguous black people we can think of in the entertainment industry. (never lonette mckee, never lena horne. but yes vin diesel. yes, jennifer beals. please. the list goes on. the blonde blue eyed ubernegro walter white is probably spinning furiously in his grave like a whirling dervish behind this mess. but i digress…)
does thandie do credible work onscreen? absolutely. but the question to ask is: can thandie open a picture? (that is, can she guarantee butts in those seats on that opening weekend, thus ensuring the powers that be that they’ll make x amount of dollars in a certain amount of time?) the resounding answer is no.
so far in hollywood, only one black woman has been able to pull that off. ONE. we all know who she is. and mullato she ain’t.
Good post Orville!!!
Let Jstew roast on that lol.
Thandie identifies as black from what I read. She would be great. I think she won the BAFTA cos she is British to a certain extent. That award ceremonies likes rewarding its’ own to an extent.
“next they’ll do a film about nzinga and cast charlize theron…afterall, both nzinga and theron are from the southern part of africa right?…someone should do a film about the ridiculousness that goes on in hollywood…a farce…”
LOL!
You are a comedianne!
