NPR: Tell Me More Segment Single Moms Of Colour Having Children Alone By Choice

with one comment

I was listening to NPR today at www.npr.org  and there is a program   called Tell Me More.  Today’s show was about women that have children on their own by choice. It was an interesting discussion.

An African American Jolene Ivy  started a support group called Mocha Moms for single mothers. The second guest is a South Asian American single mom Asra Nomani. The third guest was  Audria Dunson a married woman.

Here is the link to hear the program: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17126669

  1. Haven’t black women always bought up children on their own. I think there was even a case perhaps on Oprah of a black woman who moved to a white area away from the projects to give her kids a better life. I would loved to have somehow helped this woman. she said she felt very lost.

Black women are just taken for granted they can work their issues out. they can also be very insular, very private people.

I am glad there is a focus on them. Perhaps when their issues are identified and their voices are properly respected their childrens lives will be reflected.

As history has shown, esp with famous black women , their nemisis has not been the system, but the black men they trusted who betrayed them.
that is a theme that certainly needs addressing and I should think comes out in this forum above.

Is a big problem that black women talk about ‘their man’ instead of black men??
